Privacy policy for Wanderwort

Last updated 15 October 2026. Applies to the Wanderwort app for iPhone, published by Virtia LLC.

The short version

Wanderwort works without an account and without the internet. Your profile, the passages you read, the words you mark, the phrases and texts you collect and your places stay on your device. The app has no analytics, no advertising, no tracking and sells nothing about you. Two features send something to us when you use them: Wanderwort Plus and the report sheet. Both are described below.

What stays on your device

Your declared languages and levels, reading progress, word statuses, review schedule, collected phrases and texts, places, remembered Plus answers and your settings are stored only in the app's own storage on the phone. Deleting the app deletes them. iCloud device backups may include them under your Apple account's own terms.

Dictation in Your phrases uses the microphone button of the iOS keyboard, which is Apple's speech recognition and is governed by Apple's privacy policy. Scanning text with the camera and pronunciation of words run on the device.

Wanderwort Plus

When you ask Plus about a word, a phrase or a sentence the curated collection does not cover, the app sends to Virtia's server: the word or span, the sentence it stands in, the identifier of the passage, your declared languages and levels, and your question if you typed one. The app does not send your name, email, device identifiers, location or anything else from your phone.

Our server passes that text to Google's Gemini API to produce the explanation and returns the result. Google processes it under the terms of its API; Virtia sends no identifier with it. Answers are cached on our server, keyed by the question, so the same question is not sent again.

Your subscription is handled by Apple. We never see your payment details. To check that a Plus request comes from a subscriber, the app sends Apple's transaction identifier for your subscription, and our server verifies it with Apple's servers. That identifier is the only thing on our side that could be tied to your Apple account, and we use it for nothing else.

Reports from the app

When you send a bug report, a feature request or an idea from the app, we receive what you wrote, the picture of the page you attached (the app takes one when you tap the report button; you can remove it or attach another picture before sending), the name of the page, the passage or word you were on, the app version, your iPhone model and iOS version, and your declared languages and levels. Reports are read by the people who build the app and kept until the matter is handled, then deleted. Please do not put personal information in a report.

Server logs and retention

Our server runs in the United States. It keeps standard access logs (IP address, requested path, time, app version) for security and troubleshooting and deletes them within 30 days. Cached Plus answers contain no personal data and may be kept indefinitely. Reports are deleted once handled, or on request.

Children

Wanderwort is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.

Your choices and rights

You can use the whole app without Plus and without ever sending a report, and nothing leaves your phone. You can cancel Plus at any time in your Apple account settings. To ask what we hold from your reports, or to have it deleted, write to support@virtia.com; we answer within 30 days. Residents of the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and California have the rights their law gives them to access, correct, delete and object, and may exercise them through the same address.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it and the app's store page links to the current version. Material changes are announced in the app.
